How AWS trumps over its competitors
    • Market Domination

Despite its competitors being as powerful and aggressive in their business growth strategies, AWS trumps all when it comes to their respective market shares in the ever-growing cloud industry.

As of May 2021, Canalys, another market forecast leader, reported that of the $41.8B worth cloud industry, Amazon continued to dominate 32% of the market, ahead of its competitors by almost twice their market share.

    • Popularity

When it comes to popularity, AWS takes the cake, hands down, no questions asked. As of 2021, 42% of applications and services around the world use AWS.

AWS’s Portfolio of business boasts of a wide range of companies and businesses. From well-established organisations like NASA to youngsters like Ivory Research, AWS’s presence is ubiquitous online. If you watch Netflix, that’s AWS. Your Zoom meetings? That’s AWS too. Checking out your tweets? AWS, again, providing ‘global cloud infrastructure to deliver Twitter timelines’.

This is not restricted to tech or science firms but extends across industries. Banks, health insurance companies, video gaming, stock exchange, a myriad of applications and forums: name a service, a platform, and there’s a high probability it is all dependent on AWS, using it in both small and large ways.

Why is AWS such a success?

Adaptability

AWS’s widespread popularity has much to do with its highly adaptive nature. Building on AWS means you can choose the right tools for the job. It also allows users the rare freedom to choose the operating system, language, database and other features as per their requirements. AWS is also highly adaptable in that it allows a company the option to scale their
applications both up and down as per their requirements.

Versatility

Whether it is a fresh startup or an established firm, AWS has something for everyone. Here are a few examples which illustrate the range of services AWS offers to companies subscribing to its cloud platform:

  • AWS provides services for a complete application development
process, right from the start to deploying, running and scaling. Some of the popular services include EC2, AWS Lambda, Elastic Beanstalk, etc.
  • AWS even offers storage facilities, enabling users to store, access, govern and even analyse stored data to ensure low costs and improved agility. Amazon S3 and EBS are the most widely used AWS services for this particular function.
  • AWS also gives its users an option to store data in a database, which is optimizable and manageable.
  • For businesses that are constantly scaling up, Amazon helps in ncreasing work requests by providing complete access to AWS’s networking services like Amazon VPS and Route S3.
  • Analytics, Machine Learning and the Internet of Things are just some of the other domains AWS operates in.

Constant Innovation

As Charles Darwin famously said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” AWS is constantly evolving, updating its technologies and expanding its global network of regions.

Today, AWS has around 76 availability zones which makes it easier for its users to access AWS irrespective of the physical distance.

Its history as a cloud computing service has been filled with many innovations, like Amazon SafeMaker, a fully managed machine learning service that empowers everyday developers and scientists to use machine learning without any previous experience or the famous Amazon Lambda, a serverless computing space which allows developers to run their code without managing servers.

Due to its constant up-gradation, AWS is the only cloud platform that can be used to create anything from information technologies like databases to emerging technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The Community

With a portfolio of 1000+ business clients and a skilled workforce of over 60,000  employees, Amazon offers access to a large global community. AWS also includes access to AWS Partner Network which has thousands of system integrators specialising in AWS services, along with tens of thousands of independent software vendors who adapt their technology to work on AWS.

With AWS’s Re/Start drive in full swing, the company has also been able to successfully establish a wide community of proficient cloud practitioners specialising in AWS services.

Why AWS is here to stay in the UK

In a post-pandemic era, enterprises around the world are laying huge emphasis on protecting not only their business, but employees as well as customer data. With security breaches becoming more and more frequent, the rise of digitisation is only going to raise the stakes higher.

With the recent Brexit developments, security has grown more than important in the UK. Today, security is fundamental. As more organisations deal with the question of balancing innovation with security and regulation, the UK, with its growing cloud computing industry and a history rooted in R&D and innovation, is expected to be at the forefront.

When it comes to nurturing a culture of security, the UK’s start-up ecosystem has been leading the way. The four major UK public sectors: Government, Education, Non-Profit, Healthcare, are already neck deep in AWS services and technologies, having been exercising the same since the last few years already. So whether it is the essential healthcare
facilities of the NHS, NIHR, non-profit research sectors like Age UK and Cancer Research or established age-old world class universities like Cambridge or Oxford, AWS is an integral part of running each and every one of their most intimate functions.

As the number of enterprises migrating to the cloud escalates, so will the importance of AWS be more established and with it the UK’s ability to leverage emerging technologies.
